From PSG Classrooms to Building an IT Legacy
What happens when an engineering graduate chooses to build rather than simply find a job?
Shiv Nadar, one of India’s pioneering technology entrepreneurs, offers a remarkable answer.
Born on 14 July 1945 in Tamil Nadu, Shiv Nadar studied at Town Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam, The American College, Madurai, and later joined PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, where he completed his engineering degree in 1967.
After beginning his career at Cooper Engineering in Pune, Nadar took a bold decision.
He chose entrepreneurship.
Along with a group of colleagues, he first ventured into selling digital calculators through Microcomp.
Then, in 1976, came the idea that would change India’s technology landscape.
HCL—Hindustan Computers Limited.
Founded with an initial investment of ₹1.87 lakh, HCL began as a technology hardware company. Over the decades, it evolved into a global technology enterprise, expanding from hardware into software, IT services, and digital transformation.
But Shiv Nadar’s story doesn’t end with building a technology company.
It took another turn—toward education.
Through the Shiv Nadar Foundation, he invested heavily in creating institutions that could provide high-quality education and opportunities to talented young people.
He founded SSN College of Engineering in Chennai, remembering his father, Sivasubramaniya Nadar, and supported initiatives such as VidyaGyan schools for students from rural India.
His philosophy has increasingly moved from creating wealth to creating institutions and opportunities.
His contributions to India’s technology sector were recognized with the Padma Bhushan in 2008.
For the PSG community, his journey carries a special meaning.
A young engineering student who once walked through the classrooms of PSG College of Technology went on to build one of India’s most recognized technology enterprises—and later devoted a significant part of his wealth and energy to education.
